Short answer
ChatGPT cites the pages it finds when it searches the web for an answer. To be one of them, let OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reach your site, publish pages that answer the specific questions behind a prompt in their first lines, and earn mentions on the sites and videos the web already trusts on your topic. Then track a fixed set of prompts every month to see whether your brand is named and linked.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT cites what its searches return. It rewrites a prompt into targeted queries and sends them to search providers, Microsoft among them.
- OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is the training crawler, and the two are set separately.
- Every question behind a prompt needs a page or a passage that answers it in its first lines.
- Mentions on other sites and on YouTube track AI visibility more closely than domain authority does.
- Measure it with a fixed set of prompts every month, and give AI referrals their own channel in analytics.
How ChatGPT chooses the sources it cites
ChatGPT can search the web to answer questions with current information, and answers that use search may include citations to their sources [1]. When it searches, OpenAI says ChatGPT typically rewrites your prompt into one or more targeted queries and sends them to the search providers it partners with, and Microsoft is among the providers it names [1]. OpenAI’s own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, surfaces websites in those answers too [2].
That has two consequences. A brand can only be cited from a page that those searches can find, so SEO stays the foundation. And one prompt becomes several searches, so a ranking for the main phrase covers only part of the answer. I explain those related searches, called fan-out queries, in what is answer engine optimization (AEO).
Step 1: let ChatGPT reach your pages
OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs [2]. OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to, and it plays no part in what appears in search. Each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot.
Then check below robots.txt. OpenAI recommends allowing requests from its published IP ranges as well as allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt [2], so confirm that your host and CDN let that traffic through. Firewalls, bot protection and hosting limits can turn a crawler away while robots.txt allows it. On one of my own sites, the host’s limits answered OpenAI’s crawler with errors while robots.txt allowed it. The site now serves crawlers cached pages from its CDN, and they get a normal response.
Two more checks finish the step. A robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search [2]. And since Microsoft is one of the search providers, confirm in Bing Webmaster Tools that Bing has indexed the pages you want cited.
Step 2: answer the questions behind the prompt
Write down the prompts your buyers type, then the narrower questions an assistant would search to answer each one. For a prompt such as “best payroll software for a 50-person company”, those include pricing per employee, integrations, compliance in the buyer’s country and comparisons with named rivals. Each of those questions needs a page or a passage on your site that answers it. Plan those pages as one content set. A site that answers question after question on a subject builds topical authority, and the searches behind a prompt keep finding it.
Then write each page so a model can lift the answer out:
- The answer in the first one or two sentences of the page or section, in plain words.
- Headings that read as the question they answer.
- Specifics a model can quote: numbers, named tools, prices and dates.
- A visible updated date that changes only when the content changes.
- Clear entities: the brand, its products and its authors named the same way on every page, with structured data that matches the visible text.
Step 3: get mentioned where ChatGPT looks
Citations follow reputation. In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, mentions on YouTube had the strongest correlation with visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, at about 0.737, and branded web mentions came next, at 0.66 to 0.71 [3]. ChatGPT tracked classic authority metrics more loosely: 0.352 for branded search volume and 0.266 for Domain Rating [3]. Ahrefs also reports YouTube as ChatGPT’s sixth most-cited domain [3].
A correlation is a pointer, and this one points to the work that also wins buyers: being discussed on the sites, lists, reviews and videos people already use to choose in your category. In practice, that means three jobs:
- Get onto the comparison and best-of pages for your category, with accurate facts and prices.
- Publish videos on YouTube that answer your buyers’ questions, and earn mentions in other creators’ videos.
- Keep your profiles, reviews and directory listings consistent, so every source describes the brand the same way.
Step 4: track whether ChatGPT names you
Pick 30 to 50 prompts that match how your buyers ask, run them in ChatGPT every month, and record three things for each answer: whether your brand is named, whether it is linked, and which competitors appear instead. Your share of voice is the proportion of answers that name you. In Google Analytics 4, give chatgpt.com and the other assistants’ domains their own channel, so AI-referred sessions and conversions are reported apart from organic search.
The numbers move when the work is done. On one program, a FinTech comparison brand across 26 markets went from 14 to more than 160 answers citing it across AI Overviews and assistants, and its AI-assistant referral sessions grew from under 500 to 18,000 a month. I track citations with tools I build for the job, and the method is on my AI visibility tracking page.
A worked example: one prompt, followed through
The brand and numbers here are illustrative. A payroll software company checks the prompt “best payroll software for small businesses in Ireland” in ChatGPT. The answer names five products and cites a review site, two comparison articles and one competitor’s pricing page. The company is missing.
The sources show why. Both comparison articles rank products by price per employee, and the company’s pricing page hides its price behind a demo form. The review site shows 12 reviews of it against 300 of the leader.
That gives the program its first three jobs: publish the price per employee on the pricing page, ask the two comparison sites to include the product with its real figures, and invite existing customers to review it. The same prompt is checked again next month, with the other 49.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?
Work on pages and crawler access can show within weeks, because ChatGPT searches the live web for many answers, and a robots.txt change reaches ChatGPT search in about 24 hours. Reputation built through mentions on other sites takes months.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing me?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI treats the two settings separately, so you can block training and still appear in search answers.
Do I need to rank on Google to be cited by ChatGPT?
You need to be found by the searches ChatGPT runs: OpenAI’s own crawler and its partner search providers, Microsoft among them. The SEO work that earns rankings on Google is the same work that makes a page easy for those searches to find and trust.
Does llms.txt help ChatGPT cite my site?
Not measurably. Studies so far find no link between the file and how often a site is cited. The four steps above are what move citations. I cover the evidence in what is llms.txt.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitors and not my brand?
Usually because the sources it finds discuss them and not you: comparison pages, reviews, videos and forums. Open the sources cited in those answers, then work to get your brand onto those pages with accurate facts.
