Short answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting a brand named and linked inside the answers AI assistants give, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It builds on SEO, because assistants retrieve their sources from search indexes, and adds work on entities, structured data, off-site authority and content written so an engine can quote it. Success is measured in citations, share of voice and AI-referred sessions.
Key takeaways
- AEO competes to be quoted inside one composed answer. SEO competes for a position in a list of results.
- Assistants retrieve from search indexes, so SEO stays the foundation. Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond that.
- Each answer is built from several related searches, called fan-out queries, so a brand has to be the best source across the whole set of questions behind a topic.
- Entities, passages that can be quoted, and mentions on other trusted sites decide which brands get cited.
- Measure it with a fixed set of priority prompts, share of voice against named competitors, and AI referral traffic.
What answer engine optimization means
Search used to end in a list of links. A growing share of questions now end in an answer: a paragraph written by an AI assistant, with a few sources cited next to it. Answer engine optimization is the work of making your brand one of those sources, named in the text and linked in the citations.
The term covers every surface that composes answers: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and the assistants built on them. Generative engine optimization (GEO) describes the same goal from the retrieval side, and LLM optimization (LLMO) is a third name for overlapping work. In my programs they run as one piece of work on one SEO foundation. I compare the three terms in AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays.
Why answer engine optimization matters now
The audience has moved. Google says AI Mode passed one billion monthly users within a year of its launch [1]. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026 [2]. Those people still research vendors, compare tools and ask for recommendations. They now read the answer first.
The answer also changes what happens next. In Pew Research Center’s tracking of 900 US adults, people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when Google showed an AI summary and on 15% of visits without one, and they clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits [3]. When the answer does the shortlisting, the brands named in it are the ones that get considered.
How AI assistants choose what to cite
An assistant answers differently from a search engine. Google calls the technique behind AI Overviews and AI Mode query fan-out: the system issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one response [4]. It retrieves candidate passages for each of those searches, then writes its answer from the sources it trusts most on the topic.
That is why a ranking for the main query covers only part of the picture. In Ahrefs’ study of 863,000 search results and 4 million AI Overview citations, 38% of the cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the query itself [5]. Ahrefs reads the rest as pages found through the related searches behind the answer. To be cited, a brand has to win the sub-questions too.
Three things decide whether your page is one of the sources:
- Entities: whether the model already connects your brand to the topic, the category and the problems it solves.
- Structure: whether a passage on your page answers a specific question cleanly enough to be lifted out and quoted.
- Authority: whether other trusted sources mention you on the same topic. In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with being mentioned in AI Overviews (0.664), and the three strongest factors were all off-site [6].
A correlation is a pointer, and this one points somewhere useful: the brands that get cited tend to be the ones the rest of the web already talks about.
AEO vs SEO: what changes
SEO competes for a position in a list. AEO competes to be the source quoted inside a single composed answer, usually with a handful of citations. The foundations overlap heavily: an assistant can only cite what it can retrieve, and it retrieves from indexes that SEO builds.
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary [4]. Eligibility comes from ordinary SEO: a page Google can crawl, index and show with a snippet. AEO is the work that decides which eligible page gets quoted, across the sub-questions behind each answer and across the engines outside Google, which choose their sources their own way.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A position in the results list | A citation inside the answer |
| Unit of success | The page | The passage |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health | Entities, structure, authority on the topic |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, organic sessions | Citations, share of voice, AI referral sessions |
What an AEO program works on
- Baseline: where the brand appears across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for its priority prompts, against the competitors taking those answers.
- Questions and fan-out: the core questions buyers ask and the supporting questions an assistant searches to answer them, grouped by intent so each one has a page or a passage that answers it.
- Entity and schema coverage: what a model associates with the brand, where that stops, and structured data that matches the visible page.
- Content built for extraction: the answer in the first lines, headings that read as questions, and specifics a model can quote, such as numbers, named tools and dates.
- Authority: the mentions and links that make the brand a trusted source on the topic, earned through digital PR and link building.
- Technical access: crawling allowed in robots.txt and at the CDN, important content available as text, and a fast, stable page [4].
- Tracking: citations, share of voice and AI referral traffic, reported every month.
I run these programs on tools I build for AI citation tracking, entity and schema coverage and content mapping, alongside Ahrefs Brand Radar and Google Analytics 4. How a program runs month by month is on my answer engine optimization page.
A worked example: measuring share of voice
The numbers here are illustrative. Take a project management software brand with 50 priority prompts, checked in four engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. That makes 200 answers. The brand is named in 22 of them, an 11% share of voice. Its largest competitor is named in 84, or 42%.
Reading the 178 answers that leave the brand out shows where the gap sits. In this example, comparison questions such as “best project management tool for agencies” cite review sites and the competitor’s comparison pages, and the brand has neither.
That gives the program its first three jobs: publish comparison pages that answer those questions directly, earn mentions on the review sites the engines already cite, and correct the entity gaps, such as the product category and integrations, that the answers get wrong. The same 200 answers are then checked again every month.
How to measure answer engine optimization
Choose a fixed set of priority prompts. For each engine, record whether your brand is mentioned, whether it is cited with a link, and which competitors appear instead. Your share of voice is the proportion of those answers that include you. Track it every month, and separate AI referral traffic in analytics so you can see its effect on leads and sales.
On one program, a leading news portal’s share of voice in AI answers rose from 9% to 41% against its top five competitors. There are more results in my case studies.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
The goal differs and the foundation is shared. SEO wins a position in a list; AEO wins a citation inside an answer. Both depend on a site that can be crawled, understood and trusted.
Does AEO replace SEO?
AEO builds on SEO. Assistants retrieve from search indexes, so a site that is slow, badly structured or untrusted in search is rarely cited in answers either.
Which engines does AEO cover?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, plus the assistants built on them. Each one chooses its sources its own way, so I track them separately.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Work on retrieval can show within weeks, because assistants search the live web for many of their answers. On one e-commerce program, AI-referred sessions rose 38% and assisted conversions 19% within 60 days. Changes that depend on what a model learned in training take longer, because they wait for the next model update.
Does llms.txt help AEO?
It helps the assistants and agents that read it find your most important pages, and it costs little to publish, so it is part of my programs. The bigger gains come from the entity coverage, content and authority behind it.
